Stair Treads

Treads are the horizontal wood surfaces commonly called "steps".

Landings, platforms and winding treads are special stair treads used where a stair changes direction.

Risers or "kick boards" are the vertical component of a stair that supports the treads. Some architectural stair designs don't use risers; these are called "open-riser" stairs.

Stringers or "carriages" are the diagonal support boards that run from the top to the bottom of a stair. Stair treads and risers are attached to the stringers.
